Understanding Telogen Effluvium: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Updated: Feb 26, 2023

Hair loss is a common problem that affects people of all ages and genders. While some hair loss is normal, excessive shedding or sudden hair loss can be alarming and may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition. Telogen effluvium is one such condition that can cause temporary hair loss. In this article, we will discuss what telogen effluvium is, its causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

Telogen effluvium is a type of hair loss that occurs when the hair follicles enter the resting phase of the hair growth cycle prematurely. Normally, hair grows in a cycle that consists of three stages: anagen, catagen, and telogen. During the telogen phase, which lasts for several months, the hair follicle is in a resting state before shedding and making way for new hair growth. However, in telogen effluvium, a significant number of hair follicles enter the resting phase at the same time, resulting in excessive shedding and thinning of the hair.

Telogen effluvium can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  1. Physical or emotional stress

  2. Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy or menopause

  3. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly of iron, zinc, or biotin

  4. Medications, such as chemotherapy drugs or beta-blockers

  5. Chronic illness, such as thyroid disease or lupus

  6. Rapid weight loss or extreme dieting

  7. Surgery or physical trauma
